A Storm-Season Checklist for Every Opening in Your Treasure Coast Home
Start with a walk-around
Go around the outside of the house and count every opening: windows, entry doors, sliding and French doors, and the garage door. Each one is a place wind and debris can get in.
Windows
Note which are impact-rated and which are not. Check that each one closes and locks. Look for cracked glass or soft frames; a weak window is the first to fail.
Entry doors
Check the deadbolt, the hinges and the threshold. Doors with large glass panels or side lights deserve the same attention as windows.
Sliding and French doors
These are usually the largest openings in the house. Make sure the lock engages fully and the panels sit right in the track. If you rely on shutters here, know where the panels are and how long they take to put up.
Garage door
A garage door that fails can pressurize the house. Check the manufacturer label for its wind rating and consider bracing or a rated door if it is not rated.
Decide what to protect first
If you are moving to impact-rated openings in phases, the biggest openings and the side of the house that faces the water or open land are usually first. Send us the list and we will help you prioritize.
